Shovel used for past five years by a farmer

I was doing a search to try to find this shovel I bought a little over five years ago and came across this Amazon listing (I purchased direct from the guy that makes them) and was surprised to see the one review that was critical. I don't know what time frame Kris had expected to receive the shovel but it sounds like it was in 5 weeks and current listing at Amazon says to allow 4-6 weeks. I received mine in the time period I expected. It is a custom-made shovel so it's not shipped from stock on hand.When I ordered I told them that I would primarily use the shovel for irrigating and they suggested that I get the smaller shovel such as is described in this listing. While Kris doesn't think that this is a "real working shovel", I have quite a different thought. I imagine I've used shovels a lot more than Kris or most folks in both my farming and gardening. I have at least six shovels right now, this shovel, a scoop shovel, a trenching shovel, a square blade shovel and at least two wider shovels with fiberglass handles. Digging in mud, very wet, or hard dirt is very difficult with a wide shovel. This model of shovel was suggested to me at the time since it's easier to lift out of a furrow in a field when irrigating (less suction on the back of the blade). The stainless steel blade is not polished but quite smooth and has remained so for the past six irrigating seasons while my other shovels get a little pitted over time. It is the prettiest shovel I own. The handle is not finished with varnish and I wouldn't want it to be unless it was going to be for just show. All of my other garden tools that have a wooden handle that were varnished (i.e., two hoes) no longer have the varnish on the handle as it does not stand up to heavy use, getting wet, etc. It would have been good for the manufacturer to suggest something like treating it with linseed oil every year to help it resist water but that's probably not necessary for most users. I have left my shovel out in the rain many times and it's still in fantastic shape. The design is very strong and when I use it to dig up a tree I pry with it and never worry about it breaking.I paid much less than this price on Amazon when it was purchased in 2007 but I don't know if the manufacturer still sells them direct or not. I don't think the product should be reviewed based on price anyways because that is an agreed-upon fact when the purchase is made. I think this shovel is great for the purpose it has been designed and have been very happy with it after using it extensively.

A Ceremonial Shovel - not a Working Tool.

I just received my Father's Day shovel over a week late even though my wife purchased the product over four weeks before. The head of the shovel is about a third smaller than a normal shovel so it is not useful for full-scale digging projects. This shovel would work best for lighter digging projects in established garden beds. Because it is so small, it would take a long time to dig a new bed with this shovel. The handle is raw wood and not even varnished so you should plan in finishing the handle if you want it to handle the rigors of serious gardening. In addition, the grinding on the stainless steel is rough and the metal is pitted in many places so the shovel is not even particularly "pretty." I can see how this could possibly make a decent "ceremonial" shovel for a groundbreaking, but I cannot see how it would make for a reliable every day working garden tool for the serious gardener. On the upside, Dianne B. will take the shovel back and is giving me a full refund including the cost of my return shipping.
